Dietary Guidelines for Americans
Every five years, since 1980, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the

U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) publish a report called the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. This report is issued to help guide policy that impacts nutrition policy. It is also meant to guide doctors and the public about healthy ways to consume meals, snacks, and beverages. The Center for Science in Public Interest has an informational website about what the guidelines are and why they matter.
The 2025 -2030 report was released yesterday with a press conference from Secretary Rollins and Secretary Kennedy Jr.
How does this relate to me or CACFP?
Federal nutrition programs are to be aligned with the dietary guidelines. When big changes are made, the regulatory authorities (USDA) will make changes to the meal patterns that the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and CACFP must follow, in addition to WIC, SNAP and School Breakfast. NSLP is often the target of changing meal pattern requirements in response to the dietary guidelines. Sometimes, this will include CACFP requirements and sometimes it does not. The Secretaries have indicated they will be working to make regulatory change to align these recommendations with school meals, in particular, but there is a lot that must be done in order for that to happen and it takes time. We will be watching both the school meals side of things as well as CACFP.
Some of the items in the 2025-2030 report that experts are thinking might impact child nutrition programs are:
Added surgars
Protein
Saturated fat and dairy
Highly processed foods
