This session, From Insight to Impact - How to Comment, was the last of the CACFP Roundtable's Growing Our Voice series. In this session, we talked about what it looks like to provide public comment, what it means, and the importance of a large volume of comments - especially unique comments.

Summary

Highly recommend taking the time to listen at minute 15:11 when Lindsay Datlow, PhD, R.D., explains what USDA does with the public comments and how your comment will matter.

Some big takeaways:

  • Comment as many times as you'd like

  • Requesting extra time: request the 120 days and then can still comment about the content

  • Form letter comments are great but sort of considered as one whole group; unique comments give USDA an opportunity to hear and see what is ACTUALLY happening on the ground. They grapple with that and are required to consider how things could be done differently and report out on that in the final rule.

  • Commenting in your unique voice is the opportunity to effect change.

  • Your comment doesn't have to be a big legal document. It just needs to be about your true experience and how this proposed rule will impact that.

  • When possible, provide solutions or alternatives to the problems that might arise because of the proposed rule policies.

About the Survey

We have 197 responses so far, and we are feeling so happy about this. But also, the more robust data we have, the better it is as we continue to share the CACFP communities' experiences, thoughts, and real-world operations - not just with USDA FNA but with partners who can help advocate on your behalf. Please fill out the survey if you haven't already - and share widely!

About the Series

Growing Our Voice is a recurring learning series designed by the CACFP Roundtable to help our community understand, navigate, and confidently respond to the anticipated proposed rule that will change the meal pattern for the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP). Each session focused on easily digestible information to help us understand the commenting process, share what we hear is going to be in the proposed new meal pattern rule, and hear your thoughts as we shape a public comment that reflects the CACFP community’s needs and realities. This series supported anyone who wanted to deepen their understanding, strengthen their voice, and contribute to shaping the future of CACFP.
