Update: As Politico states it "USDA has quietly extended the public comment period for its reorganization plan to September 30." Read on to understand what this means for CACFP CACFP Roundtable's letter, and instructions to provide your own comment.

**********

In July, USDA announced a proposed reorganization plan that threatens efficient and effective operations in the organization. The proposal includes shuttering two regional offices and aligning the remainder of the 5 with the locations of the new proposed "hubs and 2 existing service centers." Additionally, it proposes to relocate much of its D.C. based staff to the new hubs. Learn more about the reorganization here.

Why does this matter?

There is a great concern that this will interrupt technical assistance, timely and efficient distribution of funds for nutrition programs, including CACFP, among many other things.

Open for Feedback

After a hearing with Congress and some Members of Congress expressing their dislike for the lack of transparency in this process, both with the public and Members of Congress themselves, USDA opened up a comment period. We are used to commenting on policies published in the Federal Register and then submit comment on Regulations.gov. This comment opportunity is different from what we usually see. It is over a short time period and to an email address.

Comment Letter

With the help of the Food Research and Action Center's (FRAC) template comment letter, we wrote and submitted one focused on the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP). Read the CACFP Roundtable letter here.

If you'd like to provide your feedback and thoughts, you can use FRAC's template letter and grab some language from the Roundtable's if any of those points resonate with you and/or your organization; Email your comment to reorganization@usda.gov by August 26th (now September 30). Find FRACs template and instructions here.
